Snagov Monastery

The Snagov Monastery, a very old orthodox monastery, 45km away from Bucharest is located on an island of Snagov Lake. The first mention about the monastery is found in 1408 by Mircea the Eldest – Vlad Dracul’s grand farther. He built a protection wall, a wooden bridge and a secret underground tunnel. During the ages, the monastery served also as printing house for the first Romanian books in Latin alphabet, an excellent hideaway and a terrible prison for boyars. The legends says that the body of Vlad the Impaler was secretly buried here, near the altar, by the monks, only the body because the ottomans took his head in Turkish Empire to prove that the fearless fighter died.In 1821 revolution the wooden bridge burnt and several years the access on the island has been done only by boat. In 2010 a new iron bridge has been open for all visitors.
